The Albemarle Music Centre is located in the centre of Hull and is not far from St Stephens and Hull Truck Theatre. Although, most people could recognise the building, very few could say the purpose of the big blue construction. This got us thinking, surely the people of Hull would know where the heart of music is here in Hull? We decided to interview two students, Lucy and Tyler, to find out more about the Albemarle and why not enough people are hearing about the concerts and events going on there.
“My name is Lucy and I have been part of the Albemarle for a couple of years now. I am in the Youth Choir and I am very excited for the Music for Youth competition that is coming up soon. However I think that people around the area are not hearing enough about these events. Although we do get a fair few people attending the concerts, the majority are all associated with the Albemarle in some way (e.g, parents, grandparents) and very few are coming to watch because they would like to hear the music their city is producing. I think this is because advertising and promoting the concerts is only going on within the Albemarle and more posters and leaflets need to be put up around the city so the opportunity for a different audience to come watch our concerts is always available.”
We also took the opportunity to interview fellow student, Tyler to see what he had to say about this situation.
Tyler, who has been associated with the music centre for four years and often closely works with the Albemarle in groups such as orchestras and choirs told us that sometimes, when he turns up to the concerts there can sometimes be as little as 50 people in the audience whereas, if more people could come and watch the youths perform, he believes he would feel much more motivated, overall, making his performance much better and also, by selling more tickets the Albemarle would gain more funds to support the young musicians.
Following Tyler's points we believe it would be very beneficial if the young performers could have the opportunity to work with a different audience from time to time, as it would mean they will always be prepared for whatever their future throws at them, whether this be a career in music or anything else!
Many students at Malet Lambert have claimed they find the music centre very beneficial however, it would make a huge improvement if more people could hear about the events they are taking part in.
Why not come and support your cities’ young people in these upcoming events:
