Here in Hull we won the City of Culture for 2017. This means that we have been given £32 million pounds to make the city better and cultural. City of culture is a team of people that use a 365 day programme to make the city that won better than it already is.
We’re working with the artists of Hull to celebrate the culture of the city and its place in the wider cultural offer of the North, and make Hull a cultural destination for must-see events. Young people are at the heart of the programme – it is this group who will inherit the longer-term benefits as a result of our focus around learning and participation.
We are giving every young person of school age the opportunity to participate in 2017, as well as thousands of volunteers who will help deliver the year. Working with businesses and organisations who want to help us, we will make Hull a better place for the people who live and work here, in particular those who have a presence in Hull or a connection to the city, and an interest in being here for the long haul.
We had interviews with various people around the school that are staff and students to see what they thought about the award that we were given:
Naomi Turnbull, Year 10:
Do you think Hull City Of Culture will be good for us?
“Yes, Because it’ll bring our city together as a community and make us closer and take pride in the fact that I’m from Hull, as I think we are diverse”
Mr Fenna, Deputy Head Teacher.
We asked Mr Fenna questions about Hull being the City of Culture -
The first thing we asked was ‘Do you feel that the City of Culture will help the society?’ he replied with “yes, it will give a positive impression on Hull as it’s had negative press recently saying things like, it’s the worse place to live. So anything that shows us in a good light is a positive thing.”
We also asked him if he’s been to any of the City of Culture events. He answered with “I haven’t yet as I have two small children so getting into those things isn’t as easy as it would be, but I will definitely be going to some of the things coming up,” the last question we asked was what he thinks about Hull. “I think that it’s a city that’s improved a lot in the last couple of years, I think it’s always improving. And it’s similar to lots of other big cities.
If people actually came to Hull and saw what it was then they’d say it’s like any other big city. It’s got lots of shops, attractions, art galleries. Just sometimes when people say or hear the word ‘Hull’ they have a negative impression. He also said he thinks the tourism has risen a lot and how he heard that it’s increased by 10%.
