Just before Christmas, students studying GCSE History and German students travelled to Berlin to immerse themselves in the culture and history of Germany.
The six day trip encompassed visits to some historically significant sites, including Sachsenhausen Museum and the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, as well as some lighter activities, such as shopping at the famous Christmas Market in the heart of Berlin.
Miss Alison Dent, Head of Humanties, organised the trip and explains the aims of the excursion.
She said, “GCSE History pupils had the opportunity to visit some sites in Berlin connected with their study of the Third Reich and the Cold War.
“For GCSE German students, they experienced German life, history and culture and had the chance to practise their communication skills by interacting with locals in German.
“Students behaved beautifully throughout the trip and we received a lot of very positive comments from those who took part.”
Some of the students took it upon themselves to deliver a speech to staff on the way home, thanking them for the time and effort they had put into planning the trip.
Year 11 student Jess Hopkin said, “We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Germany; the places we have ventured to during this trip have been genuinely interesting.
“Sachsenhausen Camp was particularly moving and it added layers of depth to our understanding of the Cold War as we witnessed its reality in the flesh.”
To further emphasise the first class behaviour exhibited by Malet Lambert students, staff were passed a letter from the Ships Officer on their return ferry journey from Germany.
It read, “Whenever I see Malet Lambert School on the Ship’s Manifest, I know I will be hosting a polite and well behaved group of children. I was not disappointed, what a lovely group of students they were, and a pleasure to have on board.
“It is rare I put pen to paper, but I must say on this occasion it is well deserved.”
