Sports teams at Malet Lambert have been on a winning streak this past couple of weeks, securing seven championship titles between five teams.
Year 9 boys football have scored a hat-trick of wins - Humberside Cup, Hull Schools League Play-offs and Hull Schools Cup.
The talented team beat South Hunsley School, St Marys College and Sirius Academy to secure their titles, and team coach and Head of PE, Mr Ripley, couldn’t be prouder.
He said, "The lads had a setback earlier in the year when they were knocked out in the semi final of the National Schools Cup, but they’ve not been beaten by it.
“They have a fantastic attitude and fight for a win until the end. Being champions in all three finals is a great achievement and is well deserved after all their hard work.”
Year 7 teams in both rugby and football have also done well this year, especially considering this is their first season together as a team.
Year 7 boys rugby shone against St Marys College and came home proud winners of the Hull Schools Rugby Plate for their age group, winning 10-4. It was a close match, and with five minutes to go it looked to be heading for a draw, but players John and Teerth sealed a win with a memorable try and conversion.
Young rugby players have been able to enjoy extra training sessions with Hull KR’s Shaun Briscoe and the community coaching team, which has helped them improve their skills - and paid off too!
For Year 7 boys football (pictured above), their victory was 3-2 over St Marys College, a strong side who often face Malet Lambert in cup finals.
At half time, Malet were in total control of the game, leading 2-0 with both goals scored by Morgan. St Marys looked to be the stronger team in the second half, quickly equalising the score. With 10 minutes to go, the ball landed at the feet of Morgan, who calmly slotted it past the St Marys goal keeper, to complete his hat-trick.
The team celebrated as they were crowned Year 7 Hull Schools Cup champions and team coach Mr Thornham commented, "It has been a great year and a pleasure to coach these lads. It’s fantastic to see the boys enjoying their football as much as they do.”
Also playing St Marys College were the Year 10 boys football team, who were hoping for victory in the Hull Schools League Play-offs
Goals from Alex, Tomasz, Kieran, Joe and Josh gave the team an 8-1 lead and saw them named league champions for the second time together as a team.
Team coach and Year 9 Progress Leader Mr Robinson said, “The lads played brilliantly, with a great hattrick of goals for Alex. This is some of the best football I have seen them play during their time at Malet Lambert.”
The final team to be playing St Marys College, and vying for the title of Hull FA Cup champions, were the U15 girls football team.
Malet started strong with Grace scoring a penalty 20 minutes into the game. Both teams battled hard in the second half with both keepers pulling off some magnificent saves, but Malet held it together and triumphed 1-0 over the opposition.
Team coach Mrs Herring said, “All the girls played superbly and it’s great to know they’re the best in the city for their age group. Woman of the match was Hannah, for a solid performance in defence throughout.”
Many sports teams still have fixtures - semi-finals and finals - to play after Easter in the summer term, so we may still need to make further room in our trophy cabinet!
