Students and staff at Malet Lambert School are celebrating an excellent crop of results today, with a pass rate of 66% - a strong increase from last year.
This means that over two thirds of our students achieved 5 A* - C grades including English and Maths, despite new tougher rules set by the government in how the 'Gold Standard' is measured.
In addition, 77% scored at least a C in English, while 72% gained at least a C in Maths.
These results make Malet Lambert the top school in East Hull and in the top three schools in the city, based on 2014 GCSE results.
Head teacher, Mrs Disbrey, is delighted and couldn’t be prouder of her students.
She said, "Congratulations to our very successful students in Year 11.
"The GCSE results are a reflection of their hard work and commitment and reflect an impressive improvement on the good grades attained by the school last year.
"We are delighted with the hard work of all our staff and the efforts made by our supportive parents. As the saying goes, ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ - the ‘village’ of Malet Lambert is proud of the success and talents of all our children."
Some of our students achieved particularly highly, and despite all the hard work and revision they had put in, they were still overwhelmed by their results.
Aimee achieved the highest grades in Year 11, with 8 A* and 2 A grades under her belt, plus a distinction in her BTEC course.
She said, “Even though I worked so hard for these grades, I really didn’t expect them and they're amazing! My teachers have really helped me achieve this, they were so supportive during my studies.
"I’m going on to Wyke College now to study for A levels in maths and science subjects and I’m aiming to become a teacher."
Bethan is another high flyer who walked away with 3 A* and 7 A grades and couldn’t have been happier.
She said, "My results are just great, I’m so happy - all the hard work and the long wait has been worth it.
"I’m going to study Photography, English Language, English Literature, Classics and French at Wyke College. Five A levels will be a lot of work but it helps me keep my options open after college.
"I’d either like to do production design or study English at university. Malet has been brilliant, and I’ll miss the teachers so much. Whenever I’ve needed anything - time, resources, help - my teachers have been there. They’ve been so amazing.”
On his way to Wilberforce College is Ben, who scored 5 A*, 2 A and 1 B grade, plus a distinction in his BTEC course.
He said, "I feel like I’ve worked hard for these results so I really deserve them. I’m not sure what I want to do in the future but I’ve chosen to go to college to study A levels in English, PE, Business and Psychology. It’s best to keep my options open for now.
"Malet has been a really great school and I’m going to miss it a lot. I’ve got so many great memories, but especially from being in the school football team.”
Harry, who aspires to work in sports journalism, is also heading to Wilberforce College with 2 A*, 5 A and 1 B grade, plus a distinction in his BTEC course.
He said, "I put a lot of work into my GCSEs and it can feel like a lot of pressure, but my results are worth it, especially with an A* in both English and Maths.
"My favourite subject is PE so I’m really glad I got an A in it, and I’ll be continuing to study it at college because I’d like to go into a career in sports journalism in the future.
"I’ll miss being at Malet, it’s been a great school with great teachers but i’m looking forward to moving to college for the next challenge.”
Another student looking forward to moving on to college is Jess, who leaves us with 2 A* and 8 A grades.
She said, "I’m really happy with my results. They are just what I need to go on to study A levels in Chemistry, Biology and French and English Literature at Wyke College.
"I’ve always wanted to be a doctor, so I’ll hopefully be going on to university to do a degree in medicine.
"Teaching staff have been so helpful throughout my GCSEs - I couldn’t have asked for a better bunch of teachers really! I’m going to miss it here but i’m looking forward to using my results to take the next step in my education."
