Match report by team coach Mr Robinson:
The Year 7 Rugby Team extended their unbeaten run to reach the quarter finals of the National Cup, beating St Peter's School from Wigan 5-4 in a terrifically competitive match.
The game was played at a neutral venue in Bolton, meaning the boys had an early and long bus journey to contend with.
The first half showed no evidence of this, however, Malet's tenacious tackling forced St Peter's to defend several sets within their own half. The pressure told eventually with an outstanding cut out ball from Adam allowing Jack to crash over in the right corner to give Malet a 4-0 lead.
The rest of the half was mostly one-way traffic but excellent defence from St Peter's meant that the sides went in at half time with the game balanced on a knife edge.
The second half saw almost a complete turnaround with several handling errors from Malet giving St Peter's opportunity after opportunity to level the scores. Malet's defence held tight, before excellent passing saw St Peter's create an overlap and touching down with 15 minutes to go. The kick was not converted and the score remained 4-4.
With the scores level, St Peter's looked to capitalise on their newly found momentum and had several opportunities to score, only to be denied by outstanding teamwork and last ditch tackling by Malet.
The momentum then swung back in favour of Malet when a drop-out from Billy cleared the halfway line and a brilliant chase forced the error from the St Peter's full-back.
This gave Malet their first opportunity of the half to press forward and, with 7 minutes to go, Billy kicked a 20 metre drop goal to give Malet a 1 point advantage.
The rest of the game was end to end, with Malet showing fantastic teamwork to ensure that they reached the final whistle with their 5-4 lead intact.
