Two Year 8 students successfully made it through to the finals of an international maths competition run by Jaguar.
The Maths Challenge competition, which pits school groups against each other to formulate a winning lap for an F1 race, opens for applications each January and Malet Lambert competed against over 90,000 other entrants from across the world to make it to last week’s final in Stratford.
The world final was held at the Heritage Motor Centre near Stratford Upon Avon and the winning teams had travelled from as far away as China and Australia to take part.
Each team had an hour and a half to set up their simulated Formula One car. They had to consider downforce, limits to speed, how much fuel is needed, cornering, weather and pit stops, amongst other factors. Once programmed, the simulated cars all competed against each other on the track to determine a winner.
30 teams took place in this final and Malet Lambert were placed 19th, which they were very pleased with, as some teams failed to finish.
Alongside the competition, Kirdihan and Alex had a tour of the museum and learned more about the career of an engineer in the motor car industry from professionals at Jaguar Land Rover.
Maths teacher, My Lumley, was very pleased with the boys’ performance, especially with it being the first time that Malet Lambert had reached the finals.
He said, “Kirdihan and Alex had a fantastic time and it was great to see them applying their maths skills so successfully.
“This kind of event gives students a positive and realistic taste of the engineering industry, and how rewarding and diverse this kind of career can be.”
