Written by Ben Cowham Year 10 Work Experience
Today Year 8 were participating in the Happy Puzzle Workshop which was held in maths.
There were numerous challenges for each table, which varied all the different skill sets the students had.
The first challenge the Happy Puzzle Company set the students was to place penguins onto a moving iceberg.
The penguins had to be balanced on the iceberg, and they couldn’t fall off.
Most students were finding this task quite challenging, but once they were stopped for a brief time by the Happy Puzzle spokesperson, they then conferred on their tactics, for example, most students planned out how many penguins should go on each side of the iceberg for balance.
The main aim of this activity was to develop their teamwork amongst each other, which involved communication, taking turns and listening to their other teammates.
Once the practice challenge was completed by everybody, the next challenge was to build a road from a set of road mats which were given to them.
To complete this challenge, the students would need to use the skills they had previously gained to complete these challenges.
Once they had completed the challenge, they would then move onto a new puzzle.
There were several puzzles that Happy Puzzle Company had created, and the further the teams moved on, the harder the puzzles would get.
All the teams said that they were really enjoying the challenges, and that they wish they had more activities like this.
Year 8 student Sam said, “It is really exciting; I would like more activities like this nine different subject areas.”
The activities allowed the students to “interact” with maths, and to explore their creative side.
