Current students, Year 11 leavers, staff and guests gathered at our annual Achievement Evening to celebrate our students and their successes.
Students who have now gone on to college, sixth form and further training returned to the school to collect GCSE certificates and special awards, whilst a select group of pupils from Years 8 - 11 were presented with accolades for proficiency in English and Maths, and for being outstanding in their year group.
Guest speaker and ex-student, Rob Palmer, whose sports broadcast career with the BBC and Sky Sports has spanned four decades, relished the chance to revisit Malet and had some words of wisdom for our young award winners.
He said,”You have so many choices available to you - never pick to do something just because your friends are doing it. Ensure you are making the right choices for you.
“Make sure you learn from your educators at Malet. If you work hard to achieve them, your GCSEs will do you well - I use my qualifications every day in my job.
“Keep achieving and wear your old school tie with pride.”
Rob picked up a new Malet tie during his visit and tweeted himself wearing it proudly while commentating on a match for Sky Sports La Liga at the weekend.
Last year’s leavers picked up awards for excellence in particular subjects, plus community awards which are often gifted by ex-students or by members of the community who are involved with the academy. The winners of our community awards were:
The ‘Excellence In Extra-curricular Music’ Award

The ‘Outstanding Achievement’ Award

The ‘Going The Extra Mile’ Award
Leighanna Teal Dawson
The ‘Achieving Their Full Potential’ Award

The ‘Year 11 Progress Leader’s’ Award

For the first time, we awarded the ‘Make Others Shine’ Award, created in memory of our beloved head teacher Jane Disbrey, who sadly passed away earlier in the year.
Following nominations from staff, the winner was Year 11 student Daniel, who was chosen for selflessly giving up his time to help out on numerous performances at lunchtimes and after school, controlling the lighting and sound for the hall.
It was a huge surprise for him on the night. He said, “I wasn’t expecting this at all. I’m really proud to be the first winner of this award.”
Thank you to all students, guests and staff who attended to support and celebrate our students’ achievements. It was an excellent event.
