Thousands of applications for a volunteering programme for Hull City of Culture have opened, hoping for help in events taking place in 2017.
The City of Culture Award is given to a UK city, due to its creative and unique nature; Hull has been selected, in time for 2017. This award grants the city money and time to improve it further still, so that Hull can thrive even more.
In 2017, seasonal events and celebrations will take place, all a tremendous task to create; because of this, the City of Culture team has opened 4,000 places for volunteers to help the events go through.
Almost 1,000 people have already expressed an interest in the placements, one of which being 83-year-old Eric Dawson. As a man who grew up during the Second World War and enjoys volunteering for projects, he instantly volunteered for this, and was one of the first 60 people to help recruit.
Although many people have expressed an interest in the project, there is still plenty of ambiguity around why Hull needs so many volunteers. Some information has been provided on the theme of the events (each season will have its own), but there is as good as no knowledge about the plans.
One event that will be taking place next year is the annual Freedom Festival, which will be sure to be bigger and better than ever. A large role in the City of Culture Award would be the Coolture Festival, which celebrates and displays many different ethnicities within Hull.
Hopefully the reason behind the volunteering programme will soon be revealed, but in the meantime, you can visit http://hull2017.co.uk/ for some more information on the happenings of the next year.
