Some of Malet Lambert School’s best Year 9 students were chosen to help out at STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) in Action, organised by engineering company HETA last week.
The two-day event, held at KC Stadium, aims to raise awareness of STEM subjects, and subsequently career opportunities, with primary schools pupils in the area.
Our chosen students, who are academically strong in STEM subjects and show a keen interest in their application, were each asked to accompany a different group of children from a primary school during the activities they were participating in.
Each activity had been arranged by one of the exhibitors at the event, ranging from Arco to KC Communications.
Callum Bratton was paired with a primary school from Roos, and enjoyed the opportunity to help out and to gain a bit more knowledge about engineering.
He said, “The group I was with were really enjoying their activities. They had 40 mins at each station and some of the activities included designing safety clothing for Arco and building a tower from straws, pins and Blu-tack and seeing how much weight it could hold.
“I like the chance to get involved in events like this, and I think I get some respect for wanting to do it.
“It was especially interesting because my best subject is science and I’m heading towards a career in engineering, so helping at this event was really relevant for me.”
