On the first day of our last term for this school year, Year 8 student Harry, 13, travelled down to London with Assistant Headteacher Mr Logan on a very special school trip.
Harry was one of three students chosen to visit 10 Downing Street to meet the government’s Enterprise Advisor Lord Young, to present an enterprise education game he has helped to design.
He was joined by Florrie, 10 from Gillshill Primary School, Harry, 14 from Sirius Academy, and representatives from Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership who organised the project.
All three schools had put forward a team of students to work on the board game with designers Engaging Education back in March, depicting how young people in Hull can progress from an idea to a working business with support from local organisations.
Lord Young invited the group to see him in London to see their contribution to his review of enterprise education first-hand.
He declared it to be very impressive and even indicated that he’d like to take it to the Prime Minister and play a game with him.
Harry, who won the Badger’s Sett Enterprise Challenge 2013 during Global Entrepreneurship Week last year, was delighted to be given the chance to visit the home of our Prime Minister.
He said, “Downing Street was amazing, it was so much bigger on the inside than it looks. We didn’t get to meet David Cameron, but we passed his cat Larry on the way to Lord Young’s office.
“After we presented the game to Lord Young, he said it was a great addition to his review and a really good idea.
“I also told him a bit about my own business, Hull’s Top Trips, and he was impressed and said he’d like to find out more about it.
“It was such a great experience and I feel very proud to have been involved. It’s not everyday you get to visit 10 Downing Street.
“Hopefully Lord Young will take on everything we showed him and he might even roll out the board game idea in other areas of the country."
Assistant Headteacher Mr Logan commented, “This was a fantastic opportunity for the students involved and another example of the great enterprise work we do, together with Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership.
“Lord Young has said he would like to visit Hull in the autumn, so we are very much looking forward to that visit and welcoming him to our city.
"As ever, we will continue to develop enterprise education in partnership with Hull City Council and Hull Youth Enterprise."
