By Chloe, Year 10
Tuesday the 8th of March was International Women’s Day, a time that celebrates women and the things they have achieved. We asked various students from Year 10 and Mr Cook to find out their female role models and why they look up to them.
Matthew: “Mine’s Adele, I think despite what she has gone through with people saying negative things about her, she carries on to be successful. Also, she publicity supported Ke$ha when she went through such a hard time.”
Lydia: “Beyoncé, she’s fierce!”
Emily: “Victoria Pendleton, she’s succeeded in both swimming and cycling and hasn’t given up on what she loves doing.”
Megan: “Probably Lorde, despite her being so young she is achieving a lot, for her age she’s made such an impact.”
Michael: “My girlfriend, she encourages me to be a better person.”
Mia: “My older sister, she’s a really lovely person and she inspires me every day.”
Ellie: “I like Brody Dalle, she’s got cool hair and is a really strong female role model to me.”
Emilia: “Adele is mine because she seems a really down to earth person despite being so famous.”
Heather: “Mine is JK Rowling, even though she felt the need to change her name in order to appeal to a wider audience, she is still a very successful author.”
Rhys: “Mine is also JK Rowling, she’s gone from being having nothing to being one of the most influential women in the world. She’s inspired millions of young children as well.”
Sophia: “My mum is my female role model; she’s done so much for me and gone through so much.”
Joel: “I like Cara Delevingne, she’s very original.”
Mr Cook: “Mine is a former student called Leanne, she went through something horrific and her reaction to what happened is what really touched me: she carried on like normal even though her life turned totally upside down, and she was one of the loveliest pupils I have ever taught.”
As well as asking people in the school about their female role models, we asked two girls from Mr Midgely’s class how they feel about being two of the only six girls who picked media as an option.
Sophia: “I feel like I’m representing the female population.”
Heather: “I feel respected for being picked for a subject that seems to be aimed at males.”
